But when you closely examine each system, as I did, you immediately notice that one has a substantial amount of content to help you embark on a journey to a reinvented body – while the other doesn’t come close.

The Jen Ferruggia Bikini Workout comes with two interactive guides to Jen’s workout program (one for gym workouts, one for home workouts) plus a series of 35 videos demonstrating each of the exercises, a full diet and nutrition guide with menus, a shopping list to help you buy the right foods when you go to the store, a summary of commonly-available diet supplements with information on whether they’re helpful or harmful, and a bonus “Booty Blast” program to help you tone your butt as well as your figure.

The Kayla Itsines Bikini Guide comes with a guide to the first 13 weeks of the workout program, and nothing else. If you buy the workout and diet “bundle” for nearly double the price, you also get a two-week diet plan along with nutrition tips and information. You can also buy the workout guide for the next 13 weeks, and a recipe guide, separately. However, as you’ll see in my “Price” comparison, that gets extremely expensive.

Kayla Itsines vs. Jen Ferruggia: Exercises and Instructions

I found the exercises in both programs quite easy to do, and I don’t think anyone would have much of a problem getting into the swing of things quickly. For the most part, the pictorial guides which were provided were really all I needed, although the videos which came with the Ferruggia program were very helpful and I found myself wishing that there had been similar Itsines videos.

Verdict: Jen Ferruggia’s Bikini Body Workout (by a narrow margin).

Jen Ferruggia vs Kayla Itsines: Exercise Program Convenience

This is another area where the major differences between the two programs weren’t obvious until I bought them and dug into them.

The Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide explains something important that isn’t clear on Kayla’s website: in order to do all of the exercises in her program, you need a lot of equipment. That means you either have to go to the gym, or buy eight different pieces of equipment so you can do the exercises at home. (If you’re wondering what they are, you’ll need a flat bench, a foam roller, a yoga mat, two dumbbells, a barbell, a kettlebell, a skipping rope and a medicine ball.)

With the Jen Ferruggia Bikini Body Workout, you only need a chair (or bench), dumbbells and a resistance band – making it easier and much less expensive to get the equipment required to do all of the exercises at home.

The other factor to consider is that Jen’s program only requires you to work out four days a week (for 45 minutes a day), while Kayla’s program doesn’t give you any days off at all (although the workouts are just 30 minutes long). That can be a factor if you have a busy schedule; if you don’t buy all the equipment required for the Kayla Itsines program you’ll have to make daily trips to the gym. That could be a major inconvenience.

I didn’t think that Kayla’s program measured up at all in this category; the flexibility to do your reps either at home or at the gym, and to work them into your own schedule instead of having to exercise every day, meant there was a clear winner.

There’s one nice advantage to Kayla’s program: you can choose between “regular” and vegetarian diets when you purchase the plan. However, her program only has general information and two weeks’ worth of meal plans, and you have to pay even more to get the recipes. Jen’s program includes a much more robust nutrition and meal planning system, and includes not only recipes but a shopping list to help you plan what you need to buy for your healthy meals.

The other big difference is that the Kayla Itsines diet limits you to 1600 calories per day, which is far below the level reputable medical authorities consider acceptable for adult women who are engaged in even moderate physical activities. The Jen Ferruggia diet allowed me to have well over 2000 calories per day – with the ability to include most of my favorite foods and even enjoy some of my favorite snacks and treats.

This is an easy one: there are no extra features or bonuses with the Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide. In fact, as I’ve already mentioned, you have to pay a lot extra just to get some of the same features that the competition offers. The Jen Ferruggia Bikini Body Workout comes with features including the 35 exercise demonstration videos, recipes and shopping list detailed in previous sections, as well as a bonus 21-day “Booty Blast” program (which I really enjoyed) focused on toning and developing a great butt to go along with your new bikini body.

Kayla Itsines vs. Jen Ferrugia: Safety

Neither program is particularly difficult or dangerous since the exercises are suitable for beginners as well as more advanced gym rats. Kayla does make a point of including safety tips in her guide, though, and also warns pregnant or nursing women not to use her program without a doctor’s approval. That’s probably good advice when it comes to any exercise and diet system, including Jen’s, but Jen doesn’t include those warnings. I don’t think that’s a big deal, but it’s worth noting.

First, the good news. In my experience with each of these programs, I lost weight.

Unfortunately, there’s bad news as well. I lost about ten pounds after starting the Kayla Itsines BBG program, but I ended up gaining it all back fairly quickly. On the other hand, I’ve lost 40 pounds on the Jen Ferruggia program, have kept it off, and have rebuilt the lean and sexy bikini body (along with the butt to go with it) that I lost nearly ten years ago.

It may be that the Kayla Itsines exercises aren’t ideal for long term success, but I don’t believe that was the problem. I think my weight loss with her system was short-lived because of the actual design of the program itself. Some of the blame is mine, because I wasn’t able to faithfully follow all of her instructions to the letter. But I believe the real issue is the Itsines system itself; after a few weeks it was just too difficult to meet all of the specifications of Kayla’s exercise regimen and diet. I have to take care of my family and our home, and just couldn’t make it to the gym seven days a week to work out as required. I also simply ran out of energy on Kayla’s 1600-calorie-a-day diet, and found that I had to eat more than allowed just to have the strength to take care of my kids and cook dinner. If you can do the workouts every single day without exception, and can stick to the rigorous, very low calorie diet, the Itsines program may work for you.

I didn’t have any such problems with the Jen Ferruggia workout and diet. It was easy to work the four days’ worth of workouts into my schedule, and I was able to eat enough so that I didn’t have regular energy crashes. That let me stay on the Bikini Body workout for a full three months and lose all the weight I had to take off, an amazing 40 pounds. I also have a body that turns heads at the gym or at the beach – the type of body I haven’t had since my early 20s, and is almost a gift from heaven at the age of 31. Of course, I also have a much-improved self image, and I’m just plain happier every day. Deciding the winner in this section was (pardon the expression if you’re on a diet) a piece of cake.

Kayla Itsines vs. Jen Ferruggia: Price

I’m not sure whether it was easier deciding the winner in the last section, or in this one.

I’ve already mentioned that there’s an additional cost to get the diet plan which is meant to accompany the Kayla Itsines workout program. (The diet can either be purchased separately or in a “bundle” with the workout program.) I’ve also mentioned that after 13 weeks, you need to buy Kayla’s exercise program for the next 13 weeks, and that her recipe guide also costs extra. So to make a fair comparison, I’ll combine all of the costs for both Kayla and Jen’s systems – and I’ll even include the cost of the “advanced level” workout that I added to Jen’s program after my first few months on the plan.

Both programs promise fast customer service. I can’t tell you about anyone else’s experiences, and mine may be unusual. However, when I needed to contact Jen Ferruggia’s customer support service, I got a response and solution within 24 hours. When I needed to contact Kayla Itsines’ people, it took nearly five days. Your mileage may vary, but that was mine.

Jen Ferruggia’s program clearly offers a 60-day no questions asked, money-back guarantee (not that I had to use it, of course). There’s no guarantee stated anywhere on Kayla Itsines’ website; they may refund your money if you ask for it (again, I didn’t), but there’s no way for me to know. What I do know is that I’m more comfortable with a company that publicly offers a guarantee than one which doesn’t.

By my calculations, the Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide wins in one of my side-by-side comparisons, the Jen Ferruggia Bikini Body Workout wins in eight, and there was one tie.

That would be a convincing victory by itself – but in the two most important categories, results and price, Jen Ferruggia’s program won emphatically.

On paper, the results are clear. To me, they’re even clearer when I look in the mirror every morning and see the bikini body that I’ve built, thanks to the Jen Ferruggia Bikini Body Workout.
